Motivation for award: !Xaus Lodge is a place to experience the depth of the Kalahari. Meet the locals and engage with their worldview. Learn from them about the animals, birds, and plants, and get to understand the enormity of desert life. And learn the real meaning of the idea that while by day we see the world, at night we see the universe. Visiting !Xaus Lodge is an immersive experience. Once the red sands are between your toes you will always return.

!Xaus Lodge, Kgalagadi

Located on the 91st sand dune off the Auob River Road in the Kgalagadi, life at !Xaus Lodge is defined by the daily rhythms of the Kalahari desert.

Owned by the local Khomani San and Mier communities, !Xaus Lodge gives guests an opportunity to experience desert life, to meet and engage with the local people, learn about the desert and its animals through walks and drives and study the night sky.

The Lodge has 12 accommodation units and offers a full-catered, all activities included tariff. Guests go on guided walks through the dunes with the local guides, meet the crafters, walk around the salt pan (weather and predators permitting!) go on game drives and enjoy sundowners on the dunes. Game viewing, bird watching, and stargazing are key planned activities.

!Xaus Lodge is a place to experience, not just observe, the Kgalagadi. And most of all, opportunities to do nothing and relax, unwind and re-energize for day-to-day life is the gift that !Xaus Lodge gives its guests.
