Type: Accommodation – Hotel
Category: Unique Experience

Motivation for award: On the fringe of the Great Karoo, the Lord Milner Hotel appears as if out of a conjurer’s hat: an authentic tribute to Victoriana, and the heart of Matjiesfontein Village. Whether it is a trip on the Old London Bus, being summoned to dinner by trumpet, soaking up the history in the Transport or Victorian museums, taking in the uniqueness of the Karoo with veld walks, hikes and mountain bikes, visiting the Boer War British Army remount encampment site (c.1900) nearby, playing a game of tennis, or simply relaxing, and reading in of the hotel’s opulent lounges or by the residents only pool, the town offers a fun, unique experience for guests.

Region: Western Cape / Matjiesfontein

The Lord Milner Hotel

Step back in time

To visit Matjiesfontein is to step back into time. This tiny village, on the fringe of the Great Karoo, was founded in 1884 by legendary railway man, James Douglas Logan. Immerse yourself in living history; life here is a tribute to the early Karoo, the Anglo-Boer War and Queen Victoria’s England.

Explore the historic ambience of the famed Lord Milner Hotel, its old world charm, gracious servers, and elegant décor—not to mention discovering its ghost stories. Here, you can dine by candlelight in The Hotel Dining Room, be served by red-jacketed porters, while feasting on local specialities such as Karoo lamb.
