Motivation for award: Ismail’s comment was “I recently spent four nights at Lake Glencairn lifestyle farm in Himeville, near Underberg in the Southern Drakensberg region. I was highly impressed with their newly built cottages overlooking the Pholela River. The cottages are tastefully decorated with a nature theme. A short walk leads to the pristine Glencairn Lake after which the working farm is named – and it is a picturesque site for picnics. The friendliness of the staff was commendable. The farm manager was gracious enough to deliver a few freshly-laid eggs to my door each morning which I thoroughly enjoyed cooking in the large covered balcony. The laid-back feel at Lake Glencairn farmstay helped to ease my stresses. The farm manager personally took me on a 4×4 drive through winding gravel roads and lush green plantations within the massive farm. Once I reached the top of the windswept hills, I could see the Maloti Mountain ranges in the distance. The farm also bottles spring water, and I was privileged when the farm manager drove up a hill and showed me the source of this sweet tasting water that flows from the Maloti mountains a few kilometers away. The feel of “wild Africa” was everywhere, especially when coming across a variety of wild animals, such as buck and giraffe, grazing on the rolling green hills. There is a trout farm on the premises as well, which adds to the attraction of this place. The location of the Lake Glencairn lifestyle farm, as they call it, is strategically located just 12km from the base of the world renowned Sani Pass that rises over 9000ft. For me, the Lake Glencairn farm stay was the ideal base to explore the nearby Sani Pass. Lake Glencairn, which recently changed hands, is the best kept secret in the Southern Drakensberg region, and I have no hesitation in nominating them. I will be back!”
