CULINARY STORYTELLING is a unique interactive African dining experience at distinctive culinary destinations. It encompasses South African food culture, music, and dance hosted by myself Eunice Rakhale-Molefe, a former restaurateur and cook book author. The package includes a book handout published and written by the host. THE BOOK SOUTH AFRICAN CULINARY HERITAGE, is about local food history and traditions interlaced with family conversations. It illustrates the culinary diversity of Southern African cuisine and some neighbouring countries, comparing the similarities and unique palatable heritages thereof. Written in a conversational style, the book is a handy culinary compilation which will bestow the reader with explorations regarding local African lifestyles history, art, clothing, music and perhaps even some song and dance. The recipes were handed down and collected over a period of time that I spent with my mother in Moletsane Soweto just before her passing. For tourists visiting these African countries – possessing a diversity of ethnic cultures, it is a worthy read regarding heritage and of-course African cuisine. A guide which should be included in any tourist’s travel pack and families.
Motivation for award: “Eunice is a former restaurateur and successful author and publisher in South Africa. She has now physically segmented her renowned cookbook, SOUTH AFRICAN CULINARY HERITATGE and these gastronomic gems are now presented through her culinary storytelling tourist experience. She is the founder and owner of Book Tourism, an imprint of CEM Publishers, an independent publishing house. Book Tourism is a South African registered company that she founded and established in 2017 with her daughter, Mothei Makhetha. The objective of this ambitious, yet humble venture is to preserve South African heritage through book publishing, and to promote tourism through authentic storytelling, offering the published books as part of the tourists’ travel packages.’’ Christo Wolmarans Johannesburg South Africa The recipes in the book are inspired by the many tables I served, interacting with tourist from different countries in Africa. The core of my conversations however, were inspired by personal circumstances. It began with a letter my daughter had written to me. The pinnacle of my conversations, on the other hand, were held primarily with my mother after personal circumstances returning to my home in Moletsane, Soweto. The chats with my mother took place over a period of two years before her passing. The dialogues skilled me in talking through complex and painful situations, using the dinner tables and family meals as conducive platforms for healthy discussions. The company has published twenty-four titles by fourteen independent authors. One of these, Thembeka Cynthia Sesi from Dobsonville, Soweto, won the PanSALB Award for 2016-2017 in the indigenous languages category for an isiXhosa language anthology. The other, Re Hatela Pele Ka Puo Ya Sesotho has been selected for listing on UN SDG Book Club African Chapter. The book club aims to use books as a tool to encourage children ages 6-12 to interact with the principles of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) through accurate reading list of books from around the African continent related to each of the 17 SDGs. Twelve of the twenty-four published titles are listed in the Gauteng Department of Education and Training’s Learner Teacher Study Material catalogue as library resources.

Prior to the lockdown I met Eunice at Indaba Hotel while I was waiting to dine for lunch. As a young professional I intend to keep my culinary roots and her recipe book incorporated with story telling is the perfect guide to keep me grounded by maintaining my heritage cooking skills.

I vote for Ms. Eunice Rakhale-Molefe for this years South African Tourism Award because of her humbling consistency as an ambassador of South Africa in her two passions of culinary service and book publishing. In both of the latter categories, Ms. Rakhale has demonstrated great amount of detail, as a contributor in the interface between exhibiting South Africa’s traditional cuisine and South Africa’s challenging political history. On the strength of the latter, I submit that Ms. Eunice Rakhale qualifies to be a deserving winner, in this category.
